•
AMD's Athlon II X4 and lower-end Phenom II X4 processors
are popular for those on a budget.
•
Intel's Core i3 and i5 processors also bring tremendous
performance for the dollar and are a good Intel
alternative to these AMD processors for the price.
• Have a few
more bucks to spend? Intel's Core i7 800 series
processors on the P55 chipset are speedy and extremely
popular in a MAINGEAR custom built computer
•
The "best of the best" experience can
be found with the Core i7 900 series on the X58
chipset.
But
don't overload on the CPU just yet if you're working
on a budget - there are considerations that may
make more of an impact on your computing experience,
like more memory or newer solid state hard drives.
MEMORY FOR YOUR CUSTOM
PC
Memory is an important and often overlooked component
in a custom built PC. In today's computing environment,
a custom computer with less than 2GB is unheard
of, and less than 4GB is less than desirable. For
everyone except those on an extremely tight budget,
we highly recommend 4GB+ of memory with a custom
built PC. It's better to upgrade to 4GB of RAM before
you upgrade to a faster CPU. Also, for most consumers,
quantity is better than speed. We offer some faster
frequency memory that is utilized best when we do
our performance enhancements for speed-freaks and
benchmark junkies, but for every day computer users,
the difference can only be felt in the wallet.
YOU'RE NOT GOING TO
RUN OUT OF SPACE ANYTIME SOON
Your computer's hard drive is more than just a place
to store digital stuff. It also has a tremendous
impact on the responsiveness of your PC, as more
often than not it's the slowest component in your
computer. The good news is that a new type of hard
drive technology is beginning to mature and reduce
in price. Solid state hard drives have no moving
hardware, are completely silent and run much cooler
than mechanical hard drives with rotating platters.
The only downside is they're more expensive. For
the price of a high quality 128 or 256GB SSD, you
could buy a premium 2TB hard drive. That's why our
customers are buying more and more 80-128GB solid
state drives as a primary OS and applications drive,
and a 1TB+ mechanical drive as a secondary storage
solution for their music, movies, and photos. It's
a killer combination that puts a smile on peoples'
faces when they try it out for the first time -
it's really a shift in performance that must be
experienced.
